Awarded in 2011 the Puppeteers of America Marjorie Batchelder McPharlin Award for puppetry-related contributions in the field of education and therapy, Karen has countless hours of experience creating and implementing unique, custom formats to creatively engage children in learning across the curriculum, through puppetry as well as other art forms including visual arts and creative writing. Contact Karen to bring arts integrated learning to your students, in hour long workshops or weeks long school residencies, world-wide! Every workshop or residency is tailored to the needs of the grade,  curriculum, and time frame and focuses on creative use of easily available materials. Lesson plans are developed in collaboration with classroom teachers to facilitate goals and assessment. Lesson sequence generally includes story development, puppet construction, and performance for peers. Adaptable to non-school formats as well.

A few recent projects:

The Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance (1 hour, once/week, 12 weeks, grades 1 – 4) Study of two related historical periods in America’s history focuses on the struggle for civil rights and for public regard for the artistic expression of African American people. Collaborative as well as individual projects focus on poetry, music, creative writing, sculpture, puppetry, and visual art in study of significant people, places, and events. The residency culminates with a student art show and puppet theater performances. Included are short researched scripts on the lives of twenty important historical figures from the era designed for use as shadow puppet presentations.

Louisiana History Alive! (1 hour, once/week, 12 weeks, grades 1 – 4) Using map skills and building timelines, the integration of creative dramatics, puppetry, creative writing, and art making in a wide variety of media creates memorable encounters with our diverse heritage. The residency culminates with a Louisiana Cultural Celebration to share with the school community.

Think, Create, Read! Experiencing Reading Comprehension Strategies Through the Arts (1 hour, once/week, 10 weeks, grades K – 3) Students experience specific tools to help them take text beyond simply recognizing words on a page, to understanding meaning. Based on Strategies That Work, Teaching Comprehension to Enhance Understanding, by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis, students experience text related arts activities focused on making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, determining importance, and synthesizing.
